This Month: The Answer to AI's Energy Needs Could be Blowing in the Wind, How Many EV Charging Stations Does the US Need to Totally Replace Gas Stations?, Networking Tips & More

In this June edition of ARC Reads we continue to share the latest tech and business articles that have piqued our interest.

What We're Reading This Month

The answer to AI’s energy needs could be blowing in the wind - Data centers and offshore wind farms could prove to be a perfect pair as AI grows increasingly energy-hungry.  Many of the companies racing to roll out new generative AI tools have also made big commitments to rein in their greenhouse gas emissions. A rush of new AI data centers could throw those climate goals off — unless they find a clean source of energy. Read more here.

What Really Motivates You at Work? - Most of us want to feel rewarded and recognized for a job well done; and most employers want to incentivize their workers to perform well and stay engaged. While these two things should align, employers unfortunately don’t always get it right. A team dinner can be a fun culmination of a group project, or it can feel like a frustrating stand-in if you were hoping for a monetary reward. On the flip side, a cash bonus quietly appearing in your inbox may feel strange if you expected public recognition for a heroic work accomplishment. Yet some people would rather call in sick than stand in front of their colleagues to receive an award. More on motivation.

How Many EV Charging Stations Does the US Need to Totally Replace Gas Stations? - BUYERS CURIOUS ABOUT making the switch to electric vehicles have made it clear in survey after survey after survey: Charging kind of freaks them out.  In many ways, drivers report, owning an EV is the same if not better than owning a gas-powered car. But fueling an electric vehicle is different, and can be inconvenient depending on where you live, and is therefore sometimes scary to even those interested in buying electric.

5 Networking Tips for Introverts (and Anyone Else) - Professionals who are extroverts are better equipped than introverts to form social connections, right? After all, they’re outgoing and more comfortable talking with strangers.  Wrong. Contrary to popular opinion, anybody can master the art of connecting with others. It’s more of a skill than an innate talent. Even the most introverted of introverts, naturally shy about approaching people, can learn to network successfully.

AI Will Increase the Quantity — and Quality — of Phishing Scams - Anyone who has worked at a major organization has likely had to do training on how to spot a phishing attack — the deceptive messages that pretend to be from legitimate sources and aim to trick users into giving away personal information or clicking on harmful links. Phishing emails often exploit sensitive timings and play on a sense of urgency, such as urging the user to update a password. But unfortunately for both companies and employees, gen AI tools are rapidly making these emails more advanced, harder to spot, and significantly more dangerous. Article.
